Overview of Havering

The London Borough of Havering is located Northeast of Gatwick Airport a distance of around 48 miles a journey that would take around an hour by taxi via the M25 and M26. It is situated in Northeast London and forms part of outer London it has a population of 237,900 according to 2011 statistics.

The principal town in Havering is Romford and the other main communities are Hornchurch, Upminster and Rainham. The name comes from an ancient folk name and became a royal manor due to it being in the possession of the Crown from the 11th to the 19th centuries and the location of Havering Palace from the 13th to the late 17th century. The area formed a Liberty from 1465 which included the parishes of Havering atte Bower, Hornchurch and Romford. The borough is mainly characterised by suburban development with large areas of protected open space, the most built-up areas are the traditional garden suburb districts of Hornchurch, Emerson Park, Gidea Park, Harold Wood, Romford and Upminster.

With half of Havering being on the Metropolitan Green Belt it has three country parks including Havering Country Park-ideal for riding and hot air ballooning, Hornchurch Country Park and Bedford Park. For shopping Romford has a Shopping Centre with variety of high street stores and Romford Market that has a variet of clothes, fresh food and bric-a-brac. For entertainment there are performances at Queens Theatre, The Millennium Centre and Eastbury Manor House.
