Overview of Hillingdon

The London Borough of Hillingdon is located North of Heathrow airport a distance of 6 miles that would take around 15 minutes by taxi via the A408. It is the westernmost borough in Greater London and has a population of 275,500 according to 2011 statistics.

Recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as a collection of rural communities and has 800 acres of woodland, country parks, fields and farms, several rivers and the Grand Union Canal within its boundaries. It is home to a number of historic landmarks including the most prominent Manor Farm that houses a unique collection of historic buildings, archaeological remains and landscape features that are set within 22 acres of beautiful grounds. The Fountain House Hotel in Hayes was once a school where the famous writer George Orwell was taught and the famous Harefield Hospital is remembered as being the place where Britains first heart-lung transplant was performed in 1983.

Other leisure activities include Ruislip Lido which boasts one of London's few beaches which is surrounded by Ruislip Woods National Nature Reserve, Uxbridge Shopping Centre which is one of the top-ten shopping centres in London, Hillingdon Sports and Leisure Complex, which includes a restored 1930s open-air pool and the picturesque villages of Harefield and Harmondsworth that are excellent places to go to take a stroll and to dine at one of the gastro-pubs or restaurants located there.
