Overview of Hull

The town of Hull is located North of Stansted Airport a distance of around 168 miles a journey that would take around 3 hours by taxi via the M11. It is located in the ceremonial county of the East Riding of Yorkshire and has a population of 256,100 according to 2011 statistics.

Hull is situated where the River Hull joins the Humber and developed as a Port exporting wool to northern Europe. The port also served as a base for Edward I during the First War of Scottish Independence and soon became the most important port on the east coast of England. With the growth of the seafaring Industry there were many wealthy merchants in Hull including the De La Pole family who entered into government and Sir William de la Pole was the towns first mayor. The fishing industry declined in the 1970s and the port today handles 13 million tonnes of cargo per year and is still a major employer in the city.

There are many places of interest for visitors to Hull, including the Princes Quay shopping centre, Hull New Theatre, East Park, Pearson Park, Pickering Park and West Park. There are several museums of national importance including Wilberforce House, the Hull and East Riding Museum, Streetlife and the Arctic Corsair trawler. The Old Town is located on the banks of the River Hull and has old warehouses, merchant houses and pubs and located in the city centre is Ferens Art Gallery and the Maritime Museum.
