Overview of Ipswich

The town of Ipswich is located East of Stansted Airport a distance of around 49 miles a journey that would take around an hour by taxi via the A120. It is located in the county of Suffolk on the estuary of the River Orwell and has a population of 138,718 according to 2011 statistics.

As one of Englands oldest towns it started as a small trading settlement in the 7th Century during the Anglo Saxon times around Ipswich Dock and was called Gippeswick. During this time Pottery had become a local industry due to the Frisian Potters settling in the town having migrated from the Netherlands, their wares were exported throughout the country and the town prosperred. During Medieval times the main export was wool and later leather making, blacksmithing, brewers, butchers, bakers and later shipbuilding. During the 19th Century it became a major manufacturing centre with industries such as brewing, brick making and iron works that made farm machinery and railway parts.

Today Ipswich is a popular place for tourists with a number of attractions on offer to visitors such as The Transport Museum, Tower Ramparts Shopping centre, The Buttermarket Shopping centre, Orwell Country Park, Christchurch Mansion, The New Wolsey Theatre and Ipswich Museum.
