Overview of Islington

The London Borough of Islington is located North of Gatwick airport a distance of 32 miles that would take around an hour by taxi via the M23 and A23. It is situated in Inner London and has a population of 206,100 according to 2011 Statistics. Its neighbouring boroughs are Camden, Hackney, Haringey and the City of London.

Islington was originally named by the Saxons as 'Giseldone' which was made up from a personal name of Gisla and 'dun' meaning hill, the name then changed into the name it is known as today. According to the historical records it is noted the area was a forest 'full of the lairs of wild beasts' such as bears, bulls and hogs. In later times it became a village providing London with butter, cream and milk due to its large dairy herds. Following this during the 19th Century the farmlands were built over with brick houses and a new era had begun with the railway and industrial development. Some neighbourhoods that Islington is comprised of include Angel, Archway, Clerkenwell, Finsbury Park, Highbury, Holloway, Kings Cross and Tufnell Park.

Some popular cultural attractions in the borough include a number of Theatres: The Kings Head Theatre, Almeida Theatre, Pleasance Theatre, Sadlers Well Theatre and Hen and Chickens Theatre.
