Overview of Islington

The London Borough of Islington is located South of Luton airport a distance of 32 miles that would take around 45 minutes by taxi via the M1. Before the 18th Century the area used to be agricultural lands and green fields until it began to be built up as a residential suburb with large estates and terrace houses, it was during this time that Islington was famous for its Spas and the health giving properties, Sadlers Wells Theatre was built on one of these sites. In the 19th Century Industries such as Brewing and Printing thrived with the development of the roads, railway and the Grand Union Canal. In the 1960s much of the Georgian and Victorian housing underwent Gentrification and this attracted many of the young wealthy professionals working in the City.

The most important areas to visitors include Upper Street, Angel and Highbury Corner most of which are lined with shops, cafes and restaurants. Angel is very busy on weekends with trendy bars and buzzing nightlife. There are many cultural and leisure activites and has a variety of Theatres to choose from aswell as Highbury Fields and Arsenal Football Club.
