An overview of Kendal
Kendal is a market town within the south Lakeland district of Cumbria. Situated on the river Kent, surrounded by low hills Kendal is 39 miles south of Carlisle. Most of the buildings in Kendal are made from local grey limestone this has given Kendal the nick name of the Auld grey town.
According to the census taken in 2001 Kendal has a population of 27,521 residents making it the third largest settlement in Cumbria.
Kendal is historically known as part of Westmorland and is renowned for the famous Kendal Mint Cake and as a producer of Pipe tobacco and tobacco snuff.
History
Listed in the Domesday Book as part of Yorkshire for many centuries Kendal was named Kirkbie Kendal. The centre of Kendal is structured surrounding a high street; the high street has alleyways leading off either side. During the Anglo-Saxon Raids citizens used to seek shelter in these alley ways, the raiders were called Border reivers . The main industry during this time was the manufacturing of woollen goods this is reflected in their coat of arms.
The municipal borough of Kendal was created in 1835. The borough boundaries were altered in 1935 by gaining a small part of South Westmorland Rural District under a County Review Order. Kendal was the administrative county of Westmorland from 1888-1974. Then in 1974 the borough of Kendal was abolished and Kendal became part of the south Lakeland district.
Today Kendal is known largely as a centre for tourism as it is near to the Lake District national park.
