Overview of Kilmarnock
The Scottish Gaelic for Kilmarnock is Cill Mhe rnaig and is locally known as Killie. It is a large burgh in East Ayrshire, with a population of 44,170 making it the second largest town in Ayrshire. Located roughly between Glasgow and Ayr with the River Irvine running through its eastern section Kilmarnock lies on the main road between Edinburgh, Livingston, South Lanarkshire, and Ayrshire (Irvine). It now has excellent road links to Glasgow via the M77 motorway reaching all the way to Fenwick.
Kilmarnocks railways began when the Kilmarnock and Troon Railways were built in 1812 by the Duke of Portland to carry his mined coal from kilmarnock to Troon. Wagons were then drawn by horses and it wasn't until 1817 that George Stevenson made an early steam engine that was briefly used on the line before it was realised that the engine caused damage. It took until 1843 for the first real Railway to be built and by the 1870s there was a railway network going in six different directions.
There are a lot of attractive buildings to be found in the busy town of Kilmarnock. It can still be very crowded despite the A77 bypass built in 1973. The pedestrianised streets meet at the heart of the town called Kilmarnock Cross. Here you can see the domed Royal Bank of Scotland Building completed in 1939 as well as a commemorating statue for the poet Robert Burns, nearby the first editions of Burns poems were printed by john wilson. This statue is but one of a number of interesting street art that can be found around the town centre.
