Overview of Abingdon
The town of Abingdon lies West of Heathrow Airport a distance of around 55 miles in the Borough of Oxfordshire. It is 5.5 miles from the town of Oxford and has a population of 36,626 according to the 2001 Census. It is thought to have been Britains oldest continuously occupied town and was formerly in Berkshire before the Boundary changes took place.
Records indicate that the area has been a settlement since the Iron Age with the Abbey being founded in Saxon Times and William the Conquerer famously celebrated Easter there. Formerly Abingdon had a thriving agricultural industry along with clothing, wool and weaving and went on to be a major link between London, Bristol and Birmingham when the canals and railways were established. In modern times the towns economy flourishes from the business parks that have companies such as Northern Rock and other national and international companies.
The town has alot to offer with walks and cycle routes along the thames and over Abingdon Bridge, the Abbey has various events through the year including theatre and craft fair. The town has many bars, cafe's, restaurants and shops for browsing in between riverside walks, boat rides on the Thames and discovering the local history.
