Overview of Aldermaston
The town of Aldermaston lies 36 miles west of Heathrow Airport that takes 40 minutes by car via the M4. It is situated in Berkshire and between the regions of West Berkshire and Hampshire. It is neighboured by the towns of Newbury and Basingstoke and is 50 miles, approx 1 hour into the centre of London.
Established by the 11th Century the towns ownership passed to the Crown who then later gave it to the Achard family and subsequenty 6 families followed in being Lords of the Manor in the years that followed. More modernly Aldermaston is known for being the place where the Williams Pear was cultivated and for being the location of the Atomic Weapons Establishment. The town has also been known for its production of Cricket Bats and Agriculture. Attractions in and around the town vary and you can visit The Living Rainforest and walk around the tropical glasshouses or see the deer on a tractor ride at Bucklebury Farm Park which you can even try out being a farmer for the day. There are old buildings to be explored such as Basildon Park and Mapledurham house and watermill or take a canal boat ride or cycle to take a tour of the beautiful canal waterways.
The village has a landmark called The Loosey which is a small green where a roman well was found by a cow that nearly fell into it, there is a Parish church, Railway station, theatre and traditional English pubs. Why not visit the towns of Newbury and Reading whilst staying in the town, with shopping facilites and other visitor attractions. Famous residents have included Paul Roche, Duncan Grant, Alan Caiger-Smith. The town is somewhat known for events such as the Candle Auction and The York Nativity Play that dates back to the 14th Century.
