Overview of Banstead

The town of Banstead is located Southeast of Heathrow airport and takes around 45 minutes by car via the M25. It is in the county of Surrey and borders greater London. Both Banstead and Reigate consitute the district of Reigate and Banstead. It is located on the North Downs east of the main road between Sutton and Reigate the rural surroundings are of outstanding beauty. Neighbouring towns are Epsom, Tadworth, Leatherhead, Kingswood and Reigate. The population was recorded as 46,280 in the 2001 Census.

The town was mentioned in a charter of anglo saxon times dating far back to AD967, it would go on to be part of the dowry of Catherine of Aragon by Henry VIII until he took it away and gave it to Sir Nicholas Carew a favourite at Court. Physician of the day would presribe a visit to Banstead to take in some of its fresh air, believed to have healing effects and so it gained a reputation of being a health resort. Modernly the town is mainly residential but has a high street with shops, restaurants and cafes and has expanded much from the rural village built around a village well that it was 150 years ago.

Things to do in and around Banstead could include walking with the Millennium Trail walk that takes in some of the best countryside of the area and through the Banstead Downs home to interesting plant life, wildlife, insects and birds. The walk includes a route through the town and then on and up to Nork Park to take in the views.
