Overview of Buckingham

The town of Buckingham is located West of Heathrow Airport a distance of 70 miles that would take around 1 hour 15 minutes by taxi. It is located in the region of North Buckinghamshire close to the borders of Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire and has a population of 11,572 according to the 2001 Census. Nearby towns include Aylesbury, Winslow, Bicester, Brackley, Milton Keynes and Towcester. The towns name is understood to mean 'meadow of Bucca's people' named after the founder and leader of the first Anglo Saxon Settlers.

The history of the town suggests that it was passed between the Saxons and the Danes and in the 10th Century became the county town of Buckinghamshire. The town was later held by Walter Gifford as recorded in the Domesday book who was created Duke of Buckinghamshire by William the Conqueror, remaining in the same family up until the reign of Henry VIII. It prospered as a medieval market town and had connections with royalty over these times from the charters of Mary Tudor in 1554, Charles II in 1684, Catherine of Aragon who stayed at Castle House in 1514, Edward VI founded the Latin School and Elizabeth I dined at Manor House on her way to Bicester.

There is plenty to do in the town which has fine Georgian architecture in the town centre that were built after the fire of 1725 had destroyed many of the houses. The town today still still retains its traditional market town charm with old buildings and narrow streets. Interesting buildings to see include the Old Gaol in the town centre, The Chantry Chapel, The Old Town Hall and the Church of St Peter and St Paul. Guided walks are available for the Circular walk a walk around the town perimeter and Buckingham Town Trail that takes visitors through the old buidings and historical landmarks. Other activities can be found in the surrounding areas including Stowe Landscape Gardens, Museum of Industry and Rural Life along with other cities such as Oxford and Milton Keynes.
