Overview of Canterbury

The town of Canterbury is located East of Heathrow Airport a distance of 90 miles that would take around 1.5 hours by taxi. It is in the district of Kent and lies on the River Stour. Its name is derived from the old english 'Cantwareburh' meaning 'Kent people's stronghold' . It has a population of 43,431 as of the 2001 Census.

The town is steeped in history and many of the buildings serve as reminders of its ancient past, such as the ruins of St Augustine's Abbey and St Martins Church. St Augustine created an episcopal see in the city in 597 and became the first Archbishop of Canterbury. The Cathedral is the most prominent landmark of the city being the oldest in England. After the murder of Thomas Beckett at the Cathedral in 1170 the town became one of the most notable towns in England with pilgrims venturing to the town to see the shrine. Canterbury is only 55 miles from the city of London and near to the coastal towns of Herne Bay and Whitstable. The city is full of traditional english charm with the city walls still in tact and many old half timbered buildings. There is a multitude of things to do besides sightseeing such as shopping, restaurants and cafes, popular places for independant retailers are the Kings Mile, St Dunstans, West Gate Towers and Northgate areas.

There are walking trails to follow through the city to take in all of the sights, along with guided walks. A relaxing way to do this is by a boat trip along the river Stour that flows through the town, offering scenic views, wildlife and beautiful architecture along the way. Visit the ruins of Canterbury Castle, The Marlowe Theatre or partake in the Canterbury Ghost Tour or go to the Canterbury Roman Museum
