Overview of Chelmsford
The town of Chelmsford is located Northeast of Heathrow airport a distance of 70 miles that would take around 1 hour 15 minutes by taxi via the M25 and A12. Being only 32 miles from Charing Cross it is part of the London Commuter Belt. Neighbouring towns include Basildon, Bishops Stortford and Southend on Sea. The town has a population of 157,072 and is thought to be increasing as more people are relocating from London and other areas of Essex. The name is derived from 'Ceolmaer's ford' that developed into Chelmsford by 1189.
The history of the town dates back to Roman times when settlers made a fort and town in 60AD and was given the name Caesaromagus meaning the market place of Ceasar, the remains of two buildings were found in the area one of the Mansio and the other an octagonal temple. The town was involved in the Peasants Revolt in 1381 with Richard II staying in the town after quelling the rebellion in London. To the North of the town in Broomfield an important Anglo-Saxon burial was found and the artefacts are housed in the British Museum. The town has its connection with the Tudor era when Henry VIII bought the Boleyn Estate from Thomas Boleyn and transformed it into Beaulieu palace later to be the residence of daughter Mary I, today it is the Catholic School of New Hall School. Formerly an agricultural and market town today it is more of a commercial town employing around 80,000 people, and is home to a number of national and international companies.
There are many things to do in Chelmsford from shopping in one of the large precincts, Meadows shopping centre and High Chelmer shopping centre, or the weekly market. For information on the towns heritage try Chelmsford Museum or Chelmsford Cathedral. The town hosts the popular V Festival one of the country's largest music events of the year. Other attractions in the surrounding areas include Ingatestone Hall, Hanningfield Reservoir Centre and Tropical Wings Butterflies and Bird Garden.
