Overview of Colchester

The town of Colchester is located Northeast of Heathrow Airport a distance of 95 miles a journey that would take around 1 hour 40 minutes by taxi via the M25. It is the largest town in the Borough of Colchester in Essex and has a population of 104,390 according to 2009 statistics and is increasing being known as one of the Uk's fastest growing towns. It is known to be the oldest town in the UK and was once the captial of Roman Britain.

The town has an interesting and varied history from being a centre for power for the king of the Catuvellauni to Roman occupation where it was the capital until it was attacked and destroyed in Boudica's rebellion in AD61 and London became the Capital. The remains of a Roman Circus have been found underneath the Garrison in Colchester. Subsequent eras of medieval, Tudor and Victorian times have left behind Colchester Castle, Benedictine Abbey of St John the Baptist, Town Hall and Jumbo Water Tower. The town also suffered a massive earthquake in 1884 that was 4.7 on the Richter Scale causing extensive damage. There are many museums in and around the town offering information on the local heritage including Hollytrees Museum, The Castle Museum, The Natural History Museum Colchester and Tymperleys Clock Museum.

Colchester is a Tourist hotspot with over 4.5 million visitors a year, some notable places to visit whilst staying in the town would be Birch Gallery, Beth Chatto Gardens, Bourne Mill, Carter's Vineyards, Castle Park and Abberton Reservoir Centre. It has an interesting and busy high street full of heritage and culture with shops, cafes and restaurants for visitors to enjoy.
