Overview of Crowborough

The town of Crowborough is located Southeast of Heathrow Airport a distance of 65 miles that would take around 1 hour and 20 minutes by taxi via the M25. Situated in the Wealdon district in East Sussex nearest towns are Rotherfield, Nutley, Royal Tunbridge Wells, Haywards Heath and Crawley. It has a population of 20,000 according to 2007 statistics. It is thought that the name is derived from Crow Beorg meaning 'crow's hill'.

The area was mainly Heathland frequented by Highwaymen and smugglers until the town underwent development in the Victorian times due to its reputed features of high elevation, rolling hills and Ashdown forests making it a popular resort for visitors wishing to improve their health, it was known as 'the scotland of essex' during this time. It is famously the home of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and he wrote many of his novels whilst living in Crowborough and there is a statue of him of commemoration in the town centre. The town boasts spectacular views of Ashdown forest and the rural areas beyond of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is a walkers paradise and has facilities for rock climbing, horse riding and cycling nearby.

The town is the largest in the area and has the charming quality of a rural english village with shops, supermarket, retailers, restaurants and cafes. Events that take place are Farmers Market once a month, Summer Fair, Christmas Event, September Carnival and the Fireworks Night. There is plenty of things to do when staying in the town such as the top tourist attraction Crowborough Caves, Crowborough Miniature Railway, Barnsgate Manor Vineyard and Wilderness Wood.
