Overview of Exeter

The City of Exeter is located Southwest of Heathrow Airport a distance of 160 miles that would take around 3 hours by taxi via the M3 and A303. It is situated in Devon. The city lies on the River Exe and is around 37 miles from Plymouth. It has a population of 119,600 according to 2010 Statistics.

The history of Exeter can be traced back to the Hellenistic period of 250 BC, and excavations in the late 20th Century established the presence of a Roman Military Fortress, Roman Baths and Roman coins that suggested it was an important trading area. The Saxons inhabited the city followed by an attempt by the Danes that failed although they did plunder the city. William the Conquerer laterovercame the townsfolk after they refused to surrender the city in 1067, eventually agreeing to his rulership if he swore an oath not to harm the city. In the early 1700's the city was prospering through trade of cloth and wool, but by Victorian times and the Industrial Revolution it declined in importance after Steam power replaced water power that the city had been generating from its fast flowing river resources.

The City has a wide range of facilites and has a large student population that attend Exeter University. Many of the popular tourists attractions in the city are historical such as The Cathedral, The Guildhall, The Custom House and Parliament Street. Other attractions include Exeter Pheonix, Exeter's Underground Passages, Castle Drogo and Connections Discovery Centre.
