Overview of Farnham
The town of Farnham is located Southwest of Heathrow Airport a distance of 32 miles that would take around 40 minutes by taxi via the M25. It is situated in Surrey in the Borough of Waverley and neighbouring towns are Aldershot and Guildford. It has a population of 37100 according to the 2001 Census.
The Saxons gave it the name Faearnhamme referring to the fern, bracken and water meadows of the land. The town is of great historic interest and can be traced back to the Stone Age with evidence of pit dwellings, Bronze Age, Iron Age with Hill Forts existing to the South of the town, Roman times where kilns have been found dating back to AD 100 used for pottery due to the Gault Clay that was abundant in the area. During Saxon times the town was donated to the Church by West Saxon King Caedwalla and it remained in its possession for the next 1000 years. Farnham Castle was built as a place of accomodation for the Bishop of Winchester. Farnham went on to be a successful market town trading in Wheat, pottery, Wool and Cloth until the Railway was established in 1848 and Farnham became a commuter town.
The town has many historical attractions such as Farnham Castle that overlooks the town, Waverley Abbey ruins, Moor Park House and Mother Ludlum's Cave. There are Georgian houses and many old buildings, gardens and cottages. There are many places to walk and beautiful scenery to enjoy in the surrounding Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Alice Holt Forest.
