Overview of Felixstowe
The town of Felixstowe is located Northeast of Heathrow Airport a distance of 120 miles that would take around 2 hours by taxi via the M25. It is situated on the North Sea coast of Suffolk and has a population of 29,349 according to the 2001 Census. The nearest towns are Ipswich and Colchester.
The town has played an important role in history in Britains defence due to the Landguard Fort built just outside the town and at the mouth of the River Orwell. The fort helped to prevent Dutch Soldiers when they landed in the Fludyers area in 1667. By the end of the 1800s it became a major port, with tourism flourishing due to the construction of the pier and railway and it soon became a fashionable resort. It is remembered as the retreat town that Mrs Simpson stayed in during the Abdication Crisis of 1936.
The town today has alot to offer anyone wanting to take a seaside break, with sandy and shingle beaches, beach huts, boating lake, nature reserve, shops, cafes and pubs. Other visitor attractions include, the Landguard Bird Observatory, Felixstowe Ferry Golf Course and Mannings Amusement Park. You can travel by foot ferry to Harwich and Shotley which are popular destinations for nature lovers, walkers and cyclists.
