Overview of Fleet
The town of Fleet is located Southwest of Heathrow Airport a distance of 28 miles that would take around 35 minutes by taxi via the A4 and M3. It is situated in the Hart district of Hampshire. It has a population of 31,687 according to 2007 statistics. Fleet is the largest town in the Hart district and in 2011 it was voted as the best place to live in the UK by the Halifax Quality of Life study.
It began as a town settlement with the establishment of the London and South Western Railway in 1840. With the seperation of the Ewshot and Crookham Parish, the parish of Fleet was established in the northern section and began to grow in terms of population and housing during the Victorian era. Today the town is used also as a commuter town to London, with Fleet Services that lies on the M3 at the edge of the town.
The town has a number of attractions that would appeal to visitors such as the Fleet Pond Local Nature Reserve, Hampshire's largest freshwater lake with reed beds, marshes, heathland and woodland and much of it is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. A day out at 'Milestones' Hampshire's Living History Museum is sure to provide an insight into the times of Queen Victoria's Reign and The Basingstoke Canal Towpath Trail stretches for over 33.5 miles providing access along the way to many places of interest such as Odiham Castle, countryside, picnic spots, historical buildings and scenic villages.
