Overview of Gosport

The town of Gosport is located Southwest of Heathrow Airport a distance of 78 miles that would take around 1 hour 40 minutes by taxi via the A247, A31 and A3. It is situated on the South Coast in the region of Hampshire and lies on a peninsula on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour opposite the City of Portsmouth that is linked by a pedestrian ferry. It has a population of 79,900 according to 2010 statistics.

History of the area can be traced back to the Mesolithic era, Bronze Age, Anglo Saxon and Normans had inhabited the peninsula and formed settlements. Between Browndown and Lee-on-the-Solent remains of a prehistoric forest are exposed by low-tides and many stone tools of the nomads of these times have been excavated there. The town grew With the establishment of the Naval Dockyard and extensive boat building took place along the harbour shores until in the later 17th Century Charles II ordered that the defences be built to protect from landborne attack. During the Second World War the Borough played an important role supplying the Navy and providing the main submarine base.

The town has alot to offer for tourists and visitors with a long stretch of waterfront on Portsmouth Harbour and The Solent. Popular attractions include Stoke Bay beach with views of the shipping of Portsmouth and Southampton, The Royal Navy Submarine Museum and the HMS Alliance a real world war II Submarine open to visitors. Priddy's Yard has lots of information and interactive exhibitions and Little Woodham is a '1642 Living History Village' an ideal place to learn about the way of life in the 17th century at the outbreak of the civil war.
