Overview of Harpenden

The town of Harpenden is located North of Heathrow airport a distance of 35 miles that would take around 40 minutes by taxi via the M24 and M40. It is situated in Hertfordshire and has a population of 28097 according to the 2001 Census.

The towns history dates back to the Roman times and evidence has been found in the park at Rothamsted and other artefacts at Coldharbour, and during Anglo Sazon era the River Lea was the agreed boundary between the Saxons and the Danes. In the days of Edward the Confessor he had given Harpenden which was part of Wheathampstead to Westminster Abbey, and it remained in its ownership until 1859. It prospered in agriculture and was good for Wheat growing and the production of straw plait flourished with many women and children taking part and selling it to the plait merchants of Luton and St Albans. With the contruction of the railway in the 19th Century and the reputation for clean air and as a healthy place to live increased the popularity and development of the Village and more than doubled its population.

The town still retains its village feel, with almost no commercial shops, nearly all being independantly run to maintain its village character. There are many open spaces and parks such as Harpenden Common which is 238 acres, that caters for rambling, horse riding, cricket, and golf. Other parks include Batford Park, Kinsbourne Green and Lydekker Park.
