Overview of Hereford

The town of Hereford is located Northwest of Heathrow a distance of 130 miles that would take around 2 hours 30 minutes by taxi via the M4, A417 and A40. It is situated in Herefordshire and lies on the River Wye and has a population of 55,800.

The towns name came from the Anglo Saxon 'here' meaning an army or formation of soldiers and 'ford' a place for crossing a river. Richard I of england describes it as 'Hereford in Wales' and there had been much conflict between the Anglo saxons and the Welsh which came to a head with the Battle of Hereford in 760 where Britons freed themselves from the influence of the English. It has always been known as a city and the once existing Hereford Castle that once rivalled Windsor in size and scale.

The town has many historic and interesting attractions such as the The Old House a timbered black and white house at the centre of the town which is now a museum, The Hereford Museum and Art Gallery, The Hereford Cider Museum and Hereford Cathedral. There are many schools and colleges and Hereford Cathedral school is one of the oldest schools in the country.
