Overview of Horley

The town of Horley is located Southwest of Heathrow Airport a distance of 45 miles that would take around 50 minutes by taxi via the M25 and M23. It it situated in Surrey and has a population of 21,232 according to the 2001 Census. It is situated almost half way between London and Brighton and is close to Gatwick Airport.

The towns history has been discovered through excavations around Horley and surrounding areas to have been middle and Late iron age, Romano-British and Medieval Settlements that were situated around Burstow Stream. In the Saxon times the manor of Horley came under the control of the Benedictine Abbey of St Peter at Chertsey by the River Thames and later came under the control of Henry VIII who then gave or sold it to various people until 1602 when it was transferred to the ownership of Christ's Hospital in London. With the establishment of the railway in 1841 the towns population increased and it steadily became a commuter town for London and a residential town for employees of Gatwick Airport.

The town has a selection of things to do such as the Archway Theatre located under the arches of the Victoria Road Railway Bridge and is an excellent base to venture out to the neighbouring towns of Redhill, Crawley, Lingfield and Reigate.
