Overview of Ilminster
The town of Ilminster is located West of Heathrow Airport a distance of 128 miles that would take around 2 hours 20 minutes by taxi via the M3 and A303. It is situated in South West Somerset and has a population of 4,781 according to 2002 Statistics. It was mentioned in the Domesday book as Ileminstre meaning 'The church on the River Isle' from the old english words of 'ysle' and 'mynster' referring to the Church of St Mary that stil towers above the town.
There are a number of places in the town that help to describe its history of such as Court Barton, a collection of ham stone buildings which include the Chantry, Cross House and the old grammar school founded in 1459. At East Street you can see one of the first Chapels that were built in the area known as the Meeting House.
There are a number of walks around the area and a great view of the Isle Valley and the town itself can be obtained from the nearby Herne Hill. A local attraction is the Warehouse Theatre and a Victorian evening is held in November each year where the town celebrates the switching on of the christmas lights.
