Overview of Llandovery

The town of Llandovery is located West of Heathrow Airport a distance of 180 miles that would take around 3 hours 20 minutes by taxi via the M4, over the Severn Bridge into Wales and the A40. It is situated in Carmarthenshire lying on the River Tywi. It has a population of 2,870 according to the 2001 Census and its name is held to mean 'church amongst the waters'.

The history of the town can be traced back to its Roman roots where a fort was located to the northeast of the modern town and was called Alabum. It was built around AD50 to 60 as part of their strategy for the conquest of Wales. The Normans had started the construction of Llandovery Castle in 1116 which was then captured by the welsh and changed hands until the reign of King Edward I of England. On the north side of Llandovery Castle the execution of Llywelyn ap Gruffydd Fychan is commemorated by his statue that was erected in 2001 and overlooks the place of his execution in the Marketplace by King Henry IV.

There are a number of attractions in the town such as Llandovery Theatre, Heritage centre and the Dolaucothi Gold Mines situated 10 miles away. Many people that stay in the town use it as a base to explore the Breacon Beacons National Park which lies immediately South of the town, it is also a stop en route to Pembrokeshire and West Wales.
