Overview of Maidstone

The town of Maidstone is located East of Heathrow Airport a distance of 66 miles that would take around 1 hour 15 minutes by taxi via the M25 and M26. It is situated in Kent and the River Medway runs through the centre, it has a population of 75,070 according to the 2001 Census.

The towns history can be traced back from archeological evidence to the Neolithic times, Romans and the Normans period. The town grew up around the river and countryside and the economy was supported by Paper Mills, Stone quarrying, brewing and cloth making. Famously the Mayor of Maidstone Andrew Broughton in 1649 was responsible for declaring the execution of Charles I. Army Barracks have been a feature of the town since 1797 and the present Invicta Barracks are home to the Royal Engineers 36 Engineer Regiment, which includes two Gurkha field squadrons.

There is plenty to do when visiting Maidstone there are bus and train services that run into London that is situated 32 miles away. There are two long distance footpaths called The Medway Valley Walk and The North Downs Way both encompassing interesting features of surrounding towns and countryside. The town is ranked one of the top five shopping centres in the South East and has modern developments such as The Mall Maidstone and the Lockmeadow Centre that also incorporates Cinema, Restaurants, Nightclubs and the Towns Market Square.
