Overview of Manningtree

The town of Manningtree is located Northwest of Heathrow Airport a distance of 198 miles that would take around 3 hours 50 minutes by taxi via the M25 and A12. It is situated in the Tendring district of Essex on the River Stour and has a population of 900 according to the 2001 Census.

It is thought that the Romans may have had a small settlement in the area during the 400 years of the Roman Occupation and later in the 15th century the town flourished in trading Wool and later in corn, timber and coal. Manningtree became an important stop on the route from London to the port at Mistley and Harwich. Manningtree claims the title of being the smallest town in England and gained fame through william Shakespeare's Henry IV Part 1 in the late 1500s. It is also home to Witchfinder General Matthew Hopkins who hunted witches all over East-Anglia during the 15th Century.

The town has some interesting places to see, The High Street retains a historical feel with buildings such as the White Hart, The Crown and the traditional Market Square still with its medieval features. Other places of interest are Manningtree Beach, South Street where Matthew Hopkins carried out much of his work and wherry Corner is a good location to take in some interesting sights of the town.
