Overview of Margate
The town of Margate is located East of Heathrow Airport a distance of 107 miles that would take around 2 hours by taxi via the M25 and M2. It is situated in the district of Thanet in East Kent and has a population of 57,008 according to the 2001 Census.
Margate has been a leading seaside resort for around 250 years and has a proud maritime history. It has been a traditional holiday destination for Londoners since the 1730s and was first transformed from a small fishing village into one of the first seaside resorts where people would travel to the town enjoy bathing in the sea, hotels and other amusements on offer in those days. In 1814 'Steam Yachts' were brought into use for people travelling to Margate from London and this lead to the towns expansion.
The town is still a popular tourist destination with all of the features of an english seaside town with Fish & Chips, Amusement Arcades, Beach huts, cafes and restaurants. Places of interest include The Old Town, The Market Place, The Vortigern Caves, Margate Museum, The Shell Grotto and the Tudor House are all well worth a visit.
