Overview of Reigate
The town of Reigate is located Southeast of Heathrow Airport a distance of 33 miles that would take around 40 minutes by taxi via the M25. It is situated in Surrey at the foot of the North Downs and in the London Commuter belt. It has a population of 21,820 according to the 2001 Census.
The history of the town can be traced back to the Bronze Age with barrows on Reigate Heath indicating a settlement in the area. In the grounds of Rosehill a Roman Kiln was recovered dating back to 92 AD. The old town was located around the Church Street area of Reigate until in the 12th Century when Reigate Castle was built the Earl de Warenne set out a new town below the castle.
There are many things to do in and around the town with shops, cafes, restaurants, pubs and bars. A popular park for visitors is Priory Park located behind the High Street with woodland, tennis courts and a football field. Other attractions include Reigate Caves, Outwood Windmill, Hampton Court Palace and Hever Castle and Gardens.
