Overview of Rochester

The town of Rochester is located East of Heathrow Airport a distance of 69 miles that would take around 1 hour 15 minutes by taxi via the M25. It is situated in Kent in the unitary authority area of the Medway along with neighbouring towns of Chatam, Gillingham, Strood and other outlying villages. It has a population of 27,000 according to the 2001 Census

The history of the city can be traced back to Neolithic times, with the Cantiaci Tribe occupying the area before the Roman Invasion. The Cathedral was built during the Medieval period along with 2 castles and much of the town. During the reign of Henry VIII St. John Fisher was executed for refusing to grant the divorce of Catherine of Aragon which led to his martyrdom along with Nicholas Ridley executed by Queen Mary as a protestant Martyr.

There are many things to do in and around the town and many historic buldings of interest such as the Guildhall, the Corn Exchange, Restoration House, Eastgate House, Rochester Castle and Rochester Cathedral. The High Street has many half-timbered buildings, cafes, boutiques and souvenir shops aswell as some interesting attractions such as Watts Charity and the Guildhall Museum.
