Overview of Sevenoaks
The town of Sevenoaks is located East of Heathrow Airport a distance of 50 miles that would take around 1 hour by taxi via the M25. It is situated in Kent and has a population of 18588 according to the 2001 Census.
The towns name is derived from the Saxon word 'Seouenaca' the name given to a small chapel near seven oak trees in Knole Park around AD 800. In 1456 Thomas Bourchier, the Archbishop of Canterbury purchased the Knole estate and built Knole House a large country mansion that dominates the town, this became the home of the Sackville family when it was given to them by Queen Elizabeth I in 1577. Today the town is only 24 miles from Charing Cross on one of the principle rail lines and has a large commuter population.
There are many things to do in Sevenoaks having a wide range of countryside attractions such as Farningham Woods, Shoreham Woods, Kemsing Downs, Oxenhill Woods and Westerham Commons. There are also attractions such as Eden Valley Museum, Sevenoaks Museum, Shoreham Land, Air and Sea Museum and River Hill Himalayan Gardens.
