Overview of Surbiton

The town of Surbiton is located Southeast of Heathrow airport a distance of 14 miles that would take around 30 minutes via the A312 and A309. It is situated next to the River Thames in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames and has a population of 108,739 according to the 2001 Census.

The town was formerly within the county of Surrey but became part of London in 1965 together with neighbouring Kingston and Richmond. Today it is a popular commuter town being only 15 minutes by fast train to London Waterloo Station. It has been home to a number of artists and writers including Pre-Raphaelite painters John Everett Millais, William Holman Hunt and Richard Jefferies and paintings such as Ophelia and The Hireling Shepherd contain in them scenes from the area. Writers such as Thomas Hardy, H G Wells and Enid Blyton all either lived or referred to the town in their novels.

There are many places of interest in Surbiton including Claremont Gardens - one of Surbitons most popular attractions, Auriol Park and Thames Ditton Railway Bridge. There are some interesting landmarks such as Coronation Hall, St Andrews Church, St Marks Church, Surbiton Clock Tower and Surbiton Railway Station.
