Overview of Swindon

The town of Swindon is located West of Heathrow Airport a distance of 68 miles that would take around 1 hour 15 minutes by taxi via the M4. It is situated in Wiltshire and has a population of 209,000 according to the 2011 Census.

The name is derived from the anglo-saxon words 'swine' and 'dun' meaning pig hill or Sweyn's Hill where Sweyn would have been the local landlord. The town prospered and expanded due to the Industrial Revolution with the construction of the Wilts and Berks Canal helping to bring trade to the area. When the Great Western Railway was established in 1840 a new town was created between the railway works and Swindon Hill. This area is now Swindon's Town Centre that is pedestrianised with indoor and outdoor shopping centres and markets and the original Swindon is known as the Old Town having many traditional buildings, shops and pubs.

There are many places of interest in Swindon such as Museum of the Great Western Railway, Lydiard House & Park, Swindon Designer Outlet, Coate Water Country Park, The Richard Jefferies Museum, Barbury Castle and Nightingale Wood. It is situated north of the Marlborough Downs and south of the Cotswolds so there are many places to walk or cycle.
