Overview of Tonbridge

The town of Tonbridge is located Southeast of Heathrow Airport a distance of 56 miles that would take around an hour by taxi via the M25. It is situated in the County of Kent on the River Medway and has a population of 107,560 according to the 2001 Census.

A Castle was built in the settlement in the 11th Century by Richard Fitz Gilbert half brother of William the Conquerer and used to govern England when William was absent. By the 13th Century Tonbridge was an important strategic settlement with a Market and Court sessions taking place and an encircling ditch defence was made. At the centre of the town there are still many buildings dating back to the 15th Century, the oldest of them being Portreeves on East Street and the Motte and Bailey castle remains to be one of the finest examples in England.

There are many places of interest in Tonbridge, it is located 4 miles north of Tunbridge Wells, 12 miles southwest of Maidstone and 29 miles southeast of London. There are many attractions in the town and some enjoyable places to visit including the Victorian Oast Houses at the Hop Farm Country Park, the half-timbered cottages of West Malling, footpaths and bridleways for hiking and boat trips from the town will take you out into open countryside.
