The name Towcester comes from the old english Tofe-ceaster, Tofe meaning River Tove and Ceaster meaning Camp making the name to mean 'Camp on the River Tove'. Due to the Iron Age artefacts found at the site of the town it is regarded as one of the oldest continually inhabited settlements in the country. In Roman Britain it was a garrison town called Lactodurum that was surrounded by a wall with towers. In the 18th and 19th centuries Watling Street was a major coaching road between London and Holyhead and the town itself flourished providing refreshment at the many Inns and stabling facilities that were available for travellers.

There are many places of interest in Towcester such as Stoke Bruerne Canal Museum, Silverstone, Towcester Racecourse, Buckingham Chantry Chapel, Salcey Forest and Stowe Landscape Gardens. Other nearby towns include Northampton, Milton Keynes and Oxford.
