Overview of Wandsworth

The town of Wandsworth is located East of Heathrow Airport a distance of 17 miles that would take around 30 minutes by taxi via the M4 and A219. It is a district of South West London and the area is identified in the London Plan as one of the 35 major centres in Greater London.

The name is derived from the River Wandle which enters the Thames at Wandsworth. In the early days it was held by William of Ansculfy and partly by St Wandrille's Abbey. When the Ram Brewery opened in 1581 beer was produced at the site for over 425 years, making it the oldest site in England at which beer had been brewed continuously. The area comprises of a variety of features such as The River Front which has a long walk towards Battersea Village and the West End, Wandsworth Common containing an area known as the 'Toast Rack' that has some of the most expensive town houses in London and The Tonsleys behind Old York Road which is a residential area of old Wandsworth.

Some attractions in Wandsworth include Bellevue Road containing several boutiques and the famous Chez Bruce restaurant where Gordon Ramsey undertook his training, the Royal Victoria Patriotic Building which is one of Wandsworth's most impressive buildings.
