Overview of Wells

The town of Wells is located West of Heathrow Airport a distance of 115 miles that would take around 2 hours 15 minutes by taxi via the M3 and A303. It is situated in Somerset on the Southern Edge of the Mendip Hills and has a population of 10,406 according to the 2001 Census.

Wells is a Cathedral City in Somerset that has a rich architectural and religious history with the first Church was founded in 704 by King Ine of Wessex. A market was established by 1136 and remained under episcopal control until its city charter from Elizabeth I in 1589. The Cathedral was damaged during the English Civil war when parliamentarian troops used it to stable their horses and battle preparations and again during the Monmouth Rebellion when the rebel army attacked the exterior as a protest against the Church. Wells had been a centre for cloth making but this had declined by the 16th and 17th Centuries although it maintained its important Market reputation.

There are many interesting places and tourist attractions in Wells, most notably Wells Cathedral & The Bishops Palace, Wells & Mendip Museum, Vicars Close, Market Place, Milton Lodge Gardens and Wookey Hole. There are many beautiful places to visit in the surrounding areas of Somerset and is home to the Somerset Levels & Moors, Exmoor National Park, Cheddar Gorge and Dunkery Beacon.
