Overview of Wimborne

The town of Wimborne is located Southwest of Heathrow airport a distance of 95 miles that would take around 1 hour 40 minutes by taxi via the M25, M3 and A31. It is situated in Dorset and has a population of 6,418 according to the 2001 Census.

The settlement of Wimborne was an old Saxon settlement and Wimborne Minster dates back to beginning of the 8th Century when the sisters of the King of the West Saxons founded a monastery there, another notable Saxon building is Wimborne Minster Church the famous location of the tombs of King Ethelred who was the brother of Alfred the Great, John Beaufort, Duke of Somerset and his Duchess who were the Grandparents of King Henry VII. The architecture of the town has the largest number of 15th, 16th and 17th Century buildings in Dorset.

There are many places of interest to visit on Wimborne such as Wimborne Model Town Exhibition, Priest's House Museum, Moors Valley Country Park, Knoll Gardens, Dorset Heavy Horse Centre and Stapehill Abbey. There are some beautiful places to walk around the town notably the water meadows and along the banks of the River Stour with its variety of wildlife such as fish, birds and insects.
