Overview of Yeovil

The town of Yeovil is located West of Heathrow airport a distance of 116 miles that would take around 2 hours by taxi via the M3 and A303. It is situated in Somerset and has a population of 40,000 according to 2002 Statistics.

The name is derived from the Celtic river name 'gifl' meaning 'forked river' and was later recorded in the Domesday book as Givele. Due to its location on the main Roman Road from Dorchester to the Fosse Way at Ilchester resulting in modern day discoveries of burials, pottery and coins near its course. In 1205 King John granted a Charter conferring the right to hold markets and it became a thriving market town. During the Black Death more than half the population were killed and in 1499 a large fire destroyed many of the timbered buildings. During the 1800s it became the centre of the Glove making industry and the population expanded and more Industrial businesses came to the town with the introduction of the Railways.
