Overview of Leeds

Leeds is located on the River Aire in West Yorkshire, it is situated in the foothills of the pennines.

According to the census taken in 2001 Leeds has a population of 443,247 residents. Leeds was awarded city status in 1893, and in 1974 the status was extended and Leeds was then named the City of Leeds .

Many industries have contributed to the overall wealth of Leeds, especially the clothing trade for which it is famous. Leeds has also undergone a vast transformation in recent years restoring many of its buildings to their Victorian magnificence. One of the most well known buildings is Leeds Town Hall which was initially opened by Queen Victoria in 1858. The corn exchange is also a renowned building in Leeds; it was built in 1865 by Cuthbert Brodrick and now houses a number of different shops and cafes.

Places to visit

There are many different places that you could visit in Leeds. Victoria quarter which is home to a variety of Designer shops and cafes. The City Art Gallery which was founded in 1888 displays a diverse range of artwork dating back to 1820. The Royal Armouries Museum is one of the worlds great museum's, with 8,000 spectacular exhibits showing us 3000 years of history. Leeds Millennium Square is located in front of The Civic Hall, The carriage Works theatre, and the old Civic Theatre currently being converted into Leeds Museum.
