The Borough is surrounded by the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the London Boroughs of Bromley and Southwark.

Lewisham is one of the largest inner London boroughs, with an area of 13.7 square miles and has a young population, with an average age of 35, against a national 39. Lewisham Central is a major transport hub and it lies on the A20 road towards Dover, it has a large bus and train station aswell as the southern terminus of the Docklands Light Railway. The borough is comprised of three old administrative parishes called St Mary Lewisham, St Margaret Lee and St Paul Deptford. The population of the area grew rapidly in the 17th and 18th centuries with the expansion of the Royal Dockyard.

Places of interest in the borough include the Albany Fringe Theatre in Deptford, The Horniman Museum which features a living water Aquarium, 16-Acre Garden and a new eco-building, the Centre for Understanding the Environment.
