Overview of London

The City of London is located North of Gatwick airport a distance of 28 miles that would take around 54 minutes by taxi via the A23. It is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom and located on the River Thames. It was founded by the Romans who named it Londinium and today has a population of 7,825,200 according to 2010 Statistics and is a leading Global City.

London has an extensive history with its first major settlement founded by the Romans in 43 AD. The Saxons came after and created a new settlement a mile upstream naming it Lundenwic. When the Vikings came this forced the settlement back to the location of Londinium in order to use the walls as protection. Following the unification of England in the 10th Century, London became an important Political Centre. Many of London's most notable buildings were built by the ruling monarch or prominent noble of the time such as Edward the Confessor who rebuilt Westminster Abbey and William Duke of Normandy who built the Tower of London and then Westminster Hall.

The city has everything from history, entertainment, leisure, culture, arts, science and much more for the visitor and tourist. The top ten most popular tourist attractions in 2009 were, The British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern, Natural History Museum, London Eye, Science Museum, Tower of London, National Maritime Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum and Madame Tussauds. The city also hosted the 2012 Olympic Games.
