Overview of Loughton

The town of Loughton is located South of Stansted Airport a distance of around 23 miles a journey that would take around 30 minutes by taxi via the B183. It is located in the Epping Forest district of Essex and has a population of 31,106 according to 2011 statistics.

During the Anglo-Saxon times it was called Lukintune which meant 'the farm of Luhha' and until the 17th Century it remained a small village until the high road was extended. It soon became the main route from London to Cambridge and East Anglia which made Loughton an important stop with many coaching inns on offer to travellers. As the town grew more of the forest was lost until the Epping Forest Act of 1878 was drawn up which preserved the forest for use by the public. Many greath houses were built for the wealthy seeking retreat from busy London, the more significant of these was Loughton Hall owned by Mary Tudor. With the arrival of the railway led to the towns expansion and made the town a visitor attraction for Londoners, and it later became a popular for artistic and scientific residents aswell as for socialists and nonconformists.

There are many attractions on offer for visitors in Loughton and the town is surrounded by open countryside, forest and parks. Epping Forest offers many leisure and outdoor persuits such as horse riding, mounting biking Orienteering and Rambling. Loughton includes three conservation areas and has 56 listed buildings in the town and has boundaries with the towns of Chingford, Waltham Abbey, Theydon Bois, Chigwell and Buckhurst Hill.
