Overview of Luton

Luton is located West of Stansted Airport a distance of around 42 miles a journey that would take around an hour by taxi via the A1. It is located in Bedfordshire only 30 miles from London and has a population of 203,600 according to 2011 statistics.

The history of the town can be traced back to Paleolithic and Neolithic periods with evidence of settlements, burial mounds and a henge called 'Wauluds Bank'. Luton began as a Saxon outpost on the River Lea in the 6th Century called Lea Tun. During the Middle Ages the town had six watermills and held a annual market, the main local industry being Agriculture which changed to brick making in the 16th Century and straw hat making in the 18th Century which later dominated the town. During the 20th Century the hat industry declined and new industries emerged such as engineering, and when Vauxhall arrived to the town in 1905 Luton soon became known for car manufacturing. With the depression in the 1930s it suffered less unemployment that many other towns due to its new industries which also included gas cookers, meters and chemical production.

Luton has a number of attractions to interest visitors with shopping facilities, parks, open spaces and cultural activities. Some places of interest include Wardown Park, Stockwood Park, The Mall shopping centre, The Hat Factory Art venue, Luton Museum, Stockwood Craft Museum and the Mossman Collection. Some other locations nearby include the Dunstable Downs, Chiltern Hills, Whipsnade Zoo and Leighton Buzzard Light Railway.
