Overview of Birkenhead
Birkenhead is a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Wirral in Merseyside, England. It is on the Wirral Peninsula, along the west bank of the River Mersey, opposite the city of Liverpool. It has a population of around 83,729. Birkenhead is located 38.5 miles from Manchester Airport and should take around 48 minutes to get there by taxi.
The name Birkenhead is possibly from the Old English bircen meaning birch tree, of which many once grew on the headland which jutted into the river at Woodside. The earliest records state that the Mersey ferry began operating from Birkenhead in 1150 when Benedictine monks built a priory there. Distanced from the Industrial Revolution in Liverpool by the physical barrier of the River Mersey, Birkenhead retained its agricultural status until the advent of the steam ferry service in 1820. Shipbuilding started in 1829. An iron works was initially established in 1824. Notable vessels built at Birkenhead include HMS Achilles, HMS Affray, CSS Alabama, HMS Ark Royal and HMS Birkenhead. In addition to the ferries, the Mersey Railway tunnel in 1886 and the Queensway road tunnel in 1934 gave rapid access to Liverpool. This opened up the Wirral peninsula for development, and prompted further growth of Birkenhead as an industrial centre.
Birkenhead Park is worth a visit as the first publicly funded park in the UK and was said to have been a major influence in the design of New York s Central Park. It also has a Roman Boathouse, two lakes and a Swiss Bridge. Birkenhead Priory dates back to 1150 AD and is the oldest standing building in Merseyside and includes several displays and museums. The Merseyside Maritime Museum and the International Slavery Museum are only 2 miles away.
