Overview of Bollington

Bollington is located 11.2 miles from Manchester Airport and should take around 28 minutes to get there by taxi. Bollington is a small town and civil parish in the county of Cheshire, England, in the unitary authority of Cheshire East,to the east of Prestbury. In the Middle Ages it was part of the Earl of Chester's manor of Macclesfield, and the ancient parish of Prestbury. According to the 2001 UK census, Bollington had a population of 7,095.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, Bollington was a major centre for cotton spinning. The Waterhouse Mill, once spun the finest cotton in the world, and was sought after by lace makers in Nottingham and Brussels. The opening of the Macclesfield Canal in 1831 provided important industrial development incentive as did the railway that followed in the 1860's. In modern times the mills have been replaced by smaller businesses although there remain two large paper coating mills.

Bollington is now a 'destination' on the tourist trail. There are lots of reasons for coming - walks, the canal, the Discovery Centre, the caf , historic buildings such as cottages and mills, all set in beautiful countryside.
