Overview of Bristol
The town of Bristol is located south of Manchester Airport a distance of 161 miles that would take around 2 hours and 34 minutes by taxi. It is a unitary authority area and ceremonial county in South West England and has a population of 433,100 as of 2009. It borders the counties of Somerset and Gloucestershire and was itself granted county status in 1373 formerly being within Gloucestershire. Surrounding towns include Bath, Chipping Sodbury and Weston-super-Mare. The town was known by the name of Brigstowe meaning 'the place at the bridge'.
Historically the town was supported by its location near the Sea and the Commercial Port of Bristol, more recently the economy has depended on creative media, electronics and aerospace industries. Bristol has an extensive Maritime Heritage and by the 15th Century was trading goods overseas particularly with Ireland and with merchants and adventureres setting sail from its Port to discover the colonies of the New World. With the success of the Port declining in the 19th Century but Isambard Kingdom Brunel a chief engineer helped attract more investment to the city, and established Clifton Suspension Bridge, SS Great Britain and Temple Meads Old Railway Station.
Today the town is the largest City in the Southwest and the largest centre of culture, employment and Education in the region. It attracts many visitors, shoppers, tourists, students and business people. Much of the original architecture remains in the areas of King Street, Queen Square, Christmas Steps, St Micheal's Hill and Clifton Village. Notable places in the city include Bristol Old Vic Theatre, Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery and Bristol Industrial Museum. For things to do with the family try Bristol Aquarium, Bristol Zoo Gardens, Wookey Hole Caves, Tyntesfield the Victorian House and Estate and Avon Valley Adventure and Wildlife Park.
