Overview of Taunton

The town of Taunton is located South of Manchester Airport at a distance of 209 miles that would take around 3.5 hours by taxi via the M5 and M6. It is the county town of Somerset and the largest town in the Shire county of Somerset. It has a population of 61,400 according to the 2001 Census.

The name is derived from 'Town on the River Tone' or Tone Town, and its history can be traced back to the Bronze and Iron ages. In Saxon times it was a place of importance having its own Mint and until the 14th Century had become a borough with considerable privileges. In Medieval times markets and fairs were held and sold woollen cloth called 'Tauntons'that had been made in the town. In 1685 the Duke of Monmouth crowned himself King of England in Taunton during the Monmouth Rebellion.
