Overview of Maidenhead

The town of Maidenhead is located North West of Gatwick airport a distance of 51 miles that would take around 58 minutes by taxi via the M25 and M4. It is situated within the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead in Berkshire and has a population of 78,000 according to the 2001 Census.

The town lies on the River Thames and the name refers to the Riverside area where the 'Maiden Hythe' was built. In 1280 a bridge was erected across the river within a few years a wharf was constructed next to the bridge and its previous name of South Ellington began to be replaced with Maidenhythe meaning 'new wharf'. The bridge helped the expansion of Maidenhead and it became a popular coaching stop on journeys between London and Bath and many Inns were established. A famous event took place in the town when Charles I met his children for the last time in the Greyhound Inn in 1649 before his execution.

The town is an excellent base to visit the surrounding areas of Windsor, Cookham, Marlow, Taplow and the Berkshire countryside. Some attractions in Maidenhead and surrounding towns include boating on the River Thames, Ascot Racecourse, The Savill Garden, Carriage rides in Windsor Great Park, Snow Hill and a guided tour of Eton College.
